BRECKENRIDGE, Colo. (CBS4) – CBS4 has learned there may have been warning signs about the suspect accused in a brutal attack on three young girls before the assaults happened.

Sky Wodraska, 37, is being held on a $2 million bond. He’s accused of trying to slash a 14-year-old’s throat and also attacking two younger girls.

Wodraska’s pattern of criminal behavior seemed to have started around two years ago. CBS4 found cases involving verbal threats and an alleged sexual assault against the child victim. There were also physical altercations with his ex-girlfriend, who is the child’s mother; and a violation of a protection order for that woman as recently as two weeks ago.

“We have to take a hard look at whether or not we served them well, and what we could have done better,” said Bruce Brown, 5th Judicial District Attorney. “Quite honestly I’m going to be doing that for the next few weeks.”

Wodraska’s life of crime started a few years ago, but between drugs and minor altercations he’s been allowed to stay out of jail on bond and probation.

“This community favors rehabilitation and really works hard to take people who have run afoul of the law and put them in a position where their life gets back on track and they don’t have any more problems,” Brown said. “When we’re unsuccessful in that, it’s very disappointing, and we see other criminal behavior coming out of it.”

From the limited documents CBS4 received it appears Wodraska couldn’t leave his ex-girlfriend and her children alone. One law enforcement source says the attack on three girls early Saturday morning is a “quantum leap forward” compared to Wodraska’s prior cases.

“It’s very hard to use a crystal ball to figure out what a judge is going to do. Sometimes it’s harder to figure out whether a judge would have done something differently if the playing field was a little bit different,” Brown said. “The important thing is we didn’t protect the people we needed to well … we need to do a better job.”

Wodraska will be in court again next week.

The judge overseeing the attempted murder case has also handled some of Wodraska’s other cases in the past, including a felony victim intimidation case that was given a deferred sentence last year.
